What Is Statutory Rape?
Statutory rape is a charge stating that a person has had sexual relations with another person who is not old enough to consent under that state's laws. That age is 16 in Connecticut. Unfortunately, even if your sexual partner consented to your relationship, you could be charged with statutory rape. Mandatory minimum sentences for sexual assault are very severe.
The statutes that govern this crime state that you could land in prison for up to 10 years; 20 years if the victim was under the age of 13. However, depending on your age, we may be able to negotiate a lesser charge and keep you off the sex offender registry.
False allegations regarding sexual assaults are not uncommon, however, once a victim has released a statement to police, it is investigated and often a party faces rape charges even if a victim recants his or her statement. If you have been accused of rape, you must speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
